[Oct. 3rd, 2008|05:15 pm] |
I made it through the workday in much less of a fog than I did yesterday. The antibiotics are starting to kick in with glorious germy death, helped along by generous amounts of hot ginger tea, orange juice, and lots and lots of popsicles. To be honest, I've been treating this thing with the tea/juice/Popsicle combo all along, but with the addition of the *Big Guns* (antibiotics) I think I have a chance of being back to normal by Tuesday next at the latest.
I got as much bed rest as I could this last week, but it was hard to stay lying down when every time I did, my chest decided to slam shut and make it hard to breathe. I compromised by grabbing half of all the pillows and blankets in the house and piling them on top of one another so that I could sleep sitting up. After I got the little one off to school, I took the other half of the pillows and blankets and set them up in a similar fashion on the loveseat so that I could watch tv. I don't know how much of a coincidence it was, but I had the entire first season of "Lost," freshly borrowed from the library to watch while I was sick.
I had watched it on tv the first time around, but I stopped watching halfway through the third season because the network changed the time of day that it was on. They would also skip a week or two every now and then for special programming, so I would also miss a chapter when I forgot to put the tv on the following week.
The storyline is good, but very complicated, so I didn't want to just borrow the third season from the library and risk confusion if the picked up a plot thread that I'd forgotten about. I'm glad I decided that, because now, I've seen stuff that I *had* forgotten about that made other plot twists make a lot more sense.
The downside of doing this while I was sick, was that I had some really odd dreams. Ok, it's kind of normal to dream that you are part of a tv show if you fall asleep watching it, but in neon colors? Maybe that was the cough medicine... And while they were hunting wild boars in the show, my dreams consisted of zombie undead wild boars, half who were lecturing me in mathematics, and the other half performing Shakespeare. I was finally rescued by John Barrowman in full pirate regalia, singing tunes from West Side Story.
I *really* hope that came from the cough medicine.... |

| | Mercedes Lackey - HawkBrother | ] | Seven year old's 30 minute rampage kills 13 rare reptiles
A seven-year-old boy has been filmed going on the rampage at a popular zoo in Australia, killing rare reptiles and feeding live ones to a crocodile.
Footage from the security cameras at Alice Springs Reptile Centre caught the child smiling as he killed a total of 13 animals.
During his 30-minute spree, he was seen hurling the animals over the security fence into the crocodile enclosure.
Zoo officials described the boy's actions as "unbelievable".
They are considering suing the parents as the boy is too young to be prosecuted.
'Difficult to replace'
The attack happened on Wednesday morning after the boy entered the zoo by jumping over the security fence and evading sensor alarms.
Over the next half hour, he bludgeoned some of the animals to death with stones and hurled others over the two fences surrounding the crocodile enclosure.
At one point, he tried scaling the outer enclosure himself to get to "Terry", the 11ft (3.3m) saltwater crocodile.
A turtle, four Western blue-tongued lizards, two bearded dragons, two thorny devil lizards and the zoo's 20-year-old goanna were among those killed.
Zoo director Rex Neindorf said many of the animals were rare or mature and would be difficult to replace.
"The fact a seven-year-old can wreak so much havoc in such a short time, it's unbelievable," he told Reuters news agency.
Mr Neindorf said the boy had "clammed up" when questioned by police.
As children under the age of 10 cannot be held accountable for their actions in the Northern Territory, the zoo would be seeking to take action against the parents.
"We'll be looking at suing the parents, who were supposedly in control of him at the time," he said.
What. The. Fuck. |

[Oct. 3rd, 2008|07:29 am] |
I haven't posted all week because I got sick. What started out as a head cold moved into my chest and tried to kill me. I caught it before it turned into pneumonia or sent me to the hospital, but I'm now on a steroid (Prednisone) to force my lungs to cooperate with my brain. I call them "the Godzilla pills" because one of the side effects it to make me jittery and nervous, with occasional outbursts of anger and irritability. I've warned everyone in the house, and will be warning my co-workers here in a bit. Basically, I won't be able to take a joke for about three days, then the dosage of the meds will start to taper off and I'll be myself again.
The doc also gave me an antibiotic, because the steroid can also weaken the immune system and allow an infection to move right in. Since it looked to the doc that I was starting to develop one anyway, I'm grateful that she thought of the need now, instead of having me go back in a week for that.
I may post more later today, or possibly tomorrow. It'll depend on how much "'roid rage" I'm feeling, and whether or not I can remember any of the interesting things I wanted to share before I got sick. |

| Planned Parenthood Action Letter: Sarah Palin is not my candidate. |
[Sep. 29th, 2008|07:53 pm] |
Hello,
Sarah Palin is not my candidate.
It is hard to believe that John McCain has actually found someone more anti-choice, more extreme, and even more out of touch on the issues that matter to women. And I'm deeply concerned about what lies ahead if McCain and Palin are elected -- disappearing reproductive health rights, dramatically decreased access to health care services for poor people, and a return to the dark ages when it comes to accurate and comprehensive sex education.
Please join me in signing Planned Parenthood Action Fund's open letter to Sarah Palin stating clearly why she is not our candidate. They need millions of people to sign this open letter -- people representing every walk of life, every part of the country, every political view. They will use the letter to represent to every voter before Election Day the sheer diversity and the enormous number of people who cannot and will not support McCain and Palin and why. Here's the letter -- click here to sign it: http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/palin_openletter
-------------------------- OPEN LETTER TO SARAH PALIN --------------------------
Dear Sarah Palin,
You are not our candidate.
You are not our candidate because you required women in Wasilla to pay for their own medical examinations after being raped.
You are not our candidate because you do not support a woman's right to choose, even in the case of rape or incest.
You are not our candidate because you've cut funding for teen moms, and for comprehensive sex education.
You are not our candidate because as vice president -- a heartbeat away from the presidency -- you would jeopardize health care for women everywhere.
We are teachers, doctors, athletes, programmers, artists, lawyers, secretaries, CEOs, students, designers, nurses, factory workers, mothers, and fathers. We are conservatives and liberals, Democrats and Republicans, country and city people. We are women and men. We are voters. We are the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
We believe in a woman's right to choose and the right of every person to have access to complete reproductive health care. We are hundreds of thousands strong, and we are doing everything we can to make sure you are not elected.
You are not our candidate.
Sincerely, + + + Please click here to add your signature: |

McCain Overstretches his Support of Veterans and Troops by: Brian McGough Sat Sep 27, 2008 at 00:05:21 AM EDT
"McCain has voted 29 times against veterans' medical benefits. In April 2006, McCain joined only 13 other senators in voting against an amendment that would increase funding for the VA to provide outpatient care and treatment. Earlier that year, McCain voted against increasing funding for military and veterans' hospitals. This was money that could have been used to fix the problems at Walter Reed before it became a national disgrace.
McCain was a staunch opponent of the bipartisan Webb/Hagel GI Bill. This bill would have provided better educational opportunities to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. McCain called this bill "too generous" and tried to introduce his own watered down bill. McCain didn't even bother to show up to vote for the bill. After it passed the two staunchest opponents of the GI Bill, President Bush and John McCain, tried to take credit for its passage.
McCain has an equally bad record when it comes to supporting our active duty soldiers. [...]"
